I found Pilates the way many people do: because of injury. In my case, it was a severe back injury, which in the acute days of this injury was managed largely through physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.
Acute pain morphed into chronic pain, which led me to Pilates classes. Under the direction of qualified instructors, I was able to regain strength; and with time and commitment and dedication to my practice, I eventually became pain-free (this took many years!)
Passion for, dedication to and obsession with the Method meant becoming a Pilates Instructor was a natural and logical progression. After working in the agricultural industry for nearly a decade, it was a total career change! I completed my Certificate IV in Pilates Matwork Instruction and Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (Pilates International Training Centre and PFI Training). In recent years I upgraded my qualification with an Advanced Diploma in the Pilates Method (Pilates ITC) which equipped me with the skills to work with clients with a specialised programming and rehabilitation scope.
I’ve always been a hard worker and committed to continuing education. I like to seek out qualifications that enhance my scope of delivery and self-mastery. I have also completed an Advanced Certificate in Pre and Post Natal Pilates with Ashley Ritchie of BASi Pilates in Prato, Italy. In 2017 I attended a Meditation and Mindfulness teacher trainer course in Melbourne, presented by The Yoga Social. I have found the addition of mindfulness into my everyday life had a huge impact on the way I interact and react to situations in real life and is a useful skill to reference in my Pilates teaching. This was the final piece to the puzzle of being able just to go and live well without the background chatter that we sometimes indulge in.
I am passionate about giving back to the industry and Pilates students and have been active in Instructor Training in various capacities over the years. Megan Joy Pilates is a Work Experience Affiliated Studio for Pilates ITC; I am also a full member of PAA (Pilates Association of Australasia), which requires regular professional development to ensure my skills are up to date with current research and techniques from around the world.
