Tips on how to get the most out of a home massager

Home massage guns are very popular at the moment and can be useful to relieve muscle tension and pain.


Here are some tips to get the most out of your massage gun and things to avoid:

1: Stick to the muscle belly and avoid bony areas.

Feel for the softer, larger part of the muscle and stay away from hard bony prominences. You will feel the difference when the massager touches muscle vs bone. Prolonged use over bony areas may cause bone bruising and pain.

2. Easy does it.

It can be tempting to go hard when massaging but try not to dig the massage gun into the muscles. You shouldn’t need to add excessive pressure when using, simply glide the device over the muscle and let the percussion do its thing. Being too forceful may result in muscle tenderness and bruising a day or two later.

3. Low and often

Try to use the lower settings on your massage gun first and use it more frequently, rather than going straight to the highest setting. This will allow you to get more relief more often, without becoming sore.

4: Utilise the head attachments

Most massage guns come with different heads for certain areas. The larger ones are great for big muscles like the glutes and legs, smaller ones for the shoulders and arms. The forked attachment is great for the spine, while the flat head attachment works well for more superficial muscles.
