What does Physiotherapy address?

Physiotherapists are most commonly sought out following the onset of pain or injury, however physios are being used more and more for those wanting to take care of their health and seek optimal function.

Specific needs and areas our centre treat include:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions – back and neck complaints, upper and lower limb complaints. Treatment to modify muscle imbalances, addressing both muscle length, strength and activation issues

  • Sports injuries - diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sporting injuries for athletes from the very elite to the very social

  • Ergonomics – education and advice regarding workplace ergonomics (office based desk set-up, manual labour) and the strategies used for injury prevention

  • Neurological conditions – such as Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease

  • Orthopaedics – post-operative care and rehabilitation from surgery and management of arthritis.

  • Shoulder surgery (rotator cuff repairs, acromioplasties, shoulder stabilization following dislocation);

  • Knee surgery (Total knee replacements/arthroplasty, ACL repairs, knee arthroscopes/reconstructions).

  • Hip surgery (Total hip replacements/arthroplasty, hip arthroscopes/reconstructions)

  • Paediatrics – management of common developmental and growth-related complaints such as traction apophysitis. This condition most commonly effects the hips, knees and heels (Osgood Schlatter's, Sever's disease)

  • Pain management – implementing strategies to deal with both acute and chronic pain, addressing both physical and psychosocial factors. In some cases, this may require referral to a pain specialist.

New Patients

To save time for your initial consultation, we recommend that you fill out our ‘New Patient Questionnaire’ prior to your visit online – this will allow for more time for treatment during your initial session. Your session will typically involve:

  • Thorough subjective examination for understanding of your presenting complaint and past medical history

  • Physical examination to assess your main complaint. You will be provided with a gown to preserve your modesty at all times.

  • Goal setting, whether it be to ease immediate pain, or return to full function. This will help guide the treatment plan and provide a better understanding of what we are trying to achieve

  • Manual therapy – implementation of treatment modalities to correct clinical signs found in the physical examination

  • Home exercise programme prescription – Stretch & Mobility. this is important for sustaining the benefits made during the appointment and correcting any strength imbalance identified

  • Recommendations for follow-up care, imaging (X-ray, MRI, Ultrasound) or referral to another health professional if physiotherapy is not indicated

Your initial consultation will be to ask about your chief complaint and to see if you are in the right place. We will discuss your medical history, perform a thorough physical, neurological and orthopaedic examination, to identify an accurate diagnosis. Findings will be explained along the way, and as such, this will take us between 50 and 60 minutes. If you have prior medical studies or imaging films and reports, please bring them with you at the time of consultation.

If we can help − we will tell you.

If we think someone else should − we will refer you.

A full summary of your findings will be discussed during the consultation; this usually takes 40 to 50 minutes. We embrace a collaborative treatment approach, and if relevant, a letter to your GP will be organised.
